Past Webinars
- MOVES Batch Mode: Setting up and running groups of related MOVES run specifications – Presented November 3, 2010
This webinar training provided instruction on setting up and running groups of related MOVES runs, including discussion of situations where “batch mode” can be useful and tips for grouping runs. Instructors demonstrated use of the MOVES "Multiple Run Spec Creator," the "Generate Importer XML File" tool, and the MOVES command line interface. The presentation used for this webinar is here: MOVES Batch Mode (PDF) (33 pp, 220K, February 2011)
Here are an example MOVES RunSpec file and an example XML file used for the demonstration:

XML file created for a batch run: lake_2011_training.xml
- Introduction to MOVES2010 – Presented October 7, 2010
This webinar provided a general overview of MOVES for both MOVES users and non-modelers. The presentation used for that webinar is here: Introduction to MOVES2010 (PDF) (63 pp, 504K, October 2010)
Two-Day Training Course for MOVES2010
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) have developed a new two-day training course for MOVES2010. This is a detailed, two-day, hands-on course geared toward state and local agency staff who will use MOVES2010 for developing SIPs and conformity analyses. Space is limited. If you are looking for more general information on MOVES, and will not be a regular user of MOVES, please attend the Introduction to MOVES web conference listed above, as it will better meet your needs and help us to accommodate the maximum number of MOVES users in the two-day course.
The first day of the training, and part of the second day, provides a detailed look at using MOVES2010 at the county scale for SIPs and regional conformity analyses based on the MOVES2010 Technical Guidance. The training covers various options for using MOVES, depending on the type of analysis and size of the area being modeled. The training also demonstrates how to create a county-level run specification file, how to use the County Data Manager to enter local data, how to use spreadsheet tools to convert MOBILE6-based input data to MOVES2010 format, and how to generate emissions results in both Inventory and Emission Rate modes. The county–level portion of the training also addresses other features of MOVES2010, such as the custom domain, alternative vehicle and fuel technology, and retrofit input options. The final part of the training focuses on the use of MOVES at the project level. The course includes numerous hands-on exercises.
To participate in a training session:
- Contact the local training sponsor prior to the training to confirm your participation in a particular session. Because these training events consist almost entirely of hands-on content and are designed for modelers, space will be limited and you must contact the local training sponsor to reserve a slot. The local contact will also provide exact locations and times for the training. Sessions and contact information for local training sponsors are listed below.
In addition, course participants will need to bring a laptop computer with the following items:
- The most recent version of MOVES2010 (currently MOVES2010a) already installed and tested. Instructors will not be able to troubleshoot any installation problems during the course, so it is very important that any installation issues be resolved before course participants arrive at the course. MOVES2010a, including instructions for downloading and installation, can be found at www.epa.gov/otaq/models/moves/index.htm.
- All presentations and files needed for the course exercises, which are posted at www.epa.gov/otaq/models/moves/training.htm.
Questions about installing MOVES or about course materials should be addressed to mobile@epa.gov. Questions about registering for individual classes should be addressed to the local contact person for that class.
Upcoming MOVES2010 Training
In 2010, EPA and FHWA staff gave this training in 16 locations around the country, and have given it at 10 additional locations in 2011 as of the end of October. Following is a list of additional training events that have been scheduled for 2011 and 2012, with date, location, and contact information. The local contact can provide exact locations and times for the training. We anticipate adding additional locations throughout the year based on local needs and past access to training. This page will be updated and a message will be sent out on the MOVES listserver (www.epa.gov/otaq/models/mobilelist.htm) as the dates of additional training events are confirmed.

Project Level Training for Quantitative PM Hotspot Analysis
EPA and DOT have developed a multi-day training course in accordance with EPA’s “Transportation Conformity Guidance for Quantitative Hot-spot Analyses in PM2.5 and PM10 Nonattainment and Maintenance Areas”. This technical, hands-on course is geared toward state and local agency staff and focuses on using emission models (including EPA's MOVES model) and air quality models (AERMOD and CAL3QHCR) for quantitative PM hot-spot analyses. More detailed information on this course including training dates and locations, as well as other webinars and presentations on this guidance, has been posted on EPA’s Transportation Conformity Training and Presentations web page: www.epa.gov/otaq/stateresources/transconf/training.htm
