Monitoring
EPA has several programs dedicated to measuring concentrations of air toxics in ambient air, and has supported studies of personal exposure to air toxics.
- National Air Toxics Trends Stations (NATTS) fulfill the need for long-term HAP monitoring data of consistent quality.
- The Urban Air Toxics Monitoring Program (UATMP) is designed to characterize the composition and magnitude of air pollution through ambient air monitoring.
- Community Scale Air Toxics Ambient Monitoring (CSATAM) projects are designed to assist state, local and tribal communities in identifying and profiling air toxics sources, characterizing the degree and extent of local air toxics problems, and tracking progress of air toxics reduction activities.
- School Air Toxics Monitoring Program monitored the air around schools for air toxics.
- The Ambient Monitoring Technology Information Center (AMTIC) contains information on ambient air quality monitoring programs, monitoring methods, quality assurance and control procedures, and federal regulations related to ambient air quality monitoring, and includes Air Toxics Monitoring.
- Several studies have examined exposures in school buses. One example of these studies is the California Air Resources Board School Bus Study which was conducted to characterize the range of children's exposures to air toxics during their school bus commute.
Modeling and Analysis Tools
Tools for assessing air quality exposure and risk are available in a variety of locations on EPA’s website.
- Support Center for Regulatory Air Models is EPA's source of information on air quality models for air toxics and criteria pollutants.
- Fate, Exposure, and Risk Analysis provides modeling tools for evaluation of health risks from air toxics and criteria pollutants. The HAPEM6 exposure model, which was used to support assessments in the final Mobile Source Air Toxics Rule, signed February 9, 2007, is available on this site.
- Consolidated Human Activities Database contains human activity data for use in inhalation exposure assessment.
- Human Exposure Database System is an integrated database system that contains chemical measurements, questionnaire responses, documents, and other information related to EPA research studies of the exposure of people to environmental contaminants.
- Transportation Conformity Guidance for Quantitative Hot-spot Analyses in PM2.5 and PM10 Nonattainment and Maintenance Areas provides methods for project level modeling that are also applicable to air toxics.
