EPA added the Metaltec/Aerosystems site in Sussex County, New Jersey to the Superfund National Priorities List on September 1, 1983 because hazardous chemicals were found in the soil and ground water. The 15 and a half acre superfund site contained a facility that manufactured metal products. The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) inspected the facilities surrounding soil and wastewater lagoon and have found heavy metals and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are potentially harmful contaminants that can easily evaporate into the air, have seeped into the ground water. Approximately 4,000 people live within three miles of the site.
As an immediate response to the contamination, EPA closed the Franklin Water Supply Well and other contaminated private wells in 1980. Affected residents were connected to the borough’s primary water supply.
EPA’s selected remedy to address contaminants at this site consist of excavating contaminated soil and pumping then treating contaminated ground water. EPA has excavated over 15,000 cubic yards of contaminated soil, portions of which were treated on-site. EPA will pump ground water and then treat it to eliminate contaminations. Treated ground water will then be recharged into a waterway on-site. Under current conditions at this site, potential or actual human exposures are under control.
