Background

The 10-acre Chem-Dyne site operated as an industrial chemical waste transfer, disposal, and storage facility in Hamilton, Ohio. Chemical waste may have been trucked to the site beginning in 1974. In 1975, Spray-Dyne produced anti-freeze there from recycled chemical waste. The operation was expanded in 1976 and the Chem-Dyne Corp. was formed. Waste unsuitable for recycling was stored on site in drums and tanks or shipped to other disposal facilities. More than 30,000 drums of waste and 300,000 gallons of bulk waste materials were left on site when operations ended in 1980. While in operation, a number of environmental incidents were reported including at least five fish kills in the Great Miami River and several fires at the site.

A cleanup was completed in 1987. It required:

a system to pump the ground water and treat it using a technology called air stripping
further treatment of contaminants with activated carbon before being released into the air
demolition of the buildings on site
removal of selected areas of soil
the placement of a synthetic cap with a clay layer over the site.

The ground water pump and treat system has been operating since 1988 and will continue until cleanup goals are met.

EPA has completed a status review of the cleanup. This type of review is required at least every five years where the cleanup is complete but hazardous waste remains managed on-site. These reviews are done to ensure that the cleanup continues to protect people and the environment.
