Background

Main Street Well Field site is 15 wells on 10 acres of land. It's the largest of three well fields owned by the city of Elkhart and supplies 70 percent of the drinking water for Elkhart residents. To address ground water contamination an air stripper system was constructed. Air stripping forces air through polluted ground water to remove contamination. Later a soil vapor extraction system was constructed to separate and remove contaminants from soil. The soil evaporation system removed about 2,300 pounds of TCE. The extraction system ended when soil clean up goals were achieved.

Site Updates

March 2012

EPA is conducting a five-year review to make sure that site cleanup at Operable Units 1 and 2 continue to protect people and the environment. In order to clean up volatile organic compounds (VOCs), an alternate water supply was installed along with an air stripper and two interceptor wells at Operable Unit 1. Cleanup at Operable Unit 2 consisted of ground water monitoring and removal and off-site disposal of a paint layer from contaminated soils. The review should be completed by June 2012.
