Description: EPA Region 5 is providing this notice of its intent to file a Proposed Consent Agreement and Proposed Final Order (Proposed CAFO) against United States Steel Company (Respondent) for violations of Section 301 of the Clean Water Act.
This Proposed CAFO will settle alleged violations at the Minntac West Pit mine in St. Louis County, Minnesota. The Respondent discharged fill and/or dredge material without a permit to wetlands adjacent to tributaries of the West Two River at its taconite mine in Mountain Iron, Minnesota. The discharges at the Minntac West Pit mine impacted a total of 5.2 acres of wetland.

EPA and Respondent have agreed in principle that the Respondent will pay a civil penalty of $161,000 to resolve these violations.
