For Homeowners: Precautions to take while cleaning up your property

Insulation, dust and potential asbestos materials in homes can create breathing hazards to homeowners, clean-up workers, volunteers and all involved in a disaster clean-up effort. Dry, windy weather also causes dusty conditions which may create additional breathing hazards.
It is highly recommended that a dust mask be worn when you work on property picking up debris, etc.
If you suspect asbestos is present, consider using a specially trained contractor to remove the material. The Iowa Division of Labor maintains a list of licensed and permitted asbestos contractors, available at www.iowaworkforce.org/labor/asbestos.htm.
If possible, and if water is available, wetting down these materials will help control dusty conditions. Asbestos materials should always be wet during removal.
In handling suspected asbestos materials, EPA recommends that, at a minimum, you wear gloves, goggles, and an OSHA-approved respirator, if available. Though not a legal requirement, this is for your protection.
