REMOVAL COMPLETE - Manhattan Avenue Battery Superfund Site, Manhattan, Kansas
INTRODUCTION
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 7 has completed cleanup activities at the Manhattan Avenue Battery Superfund Site in Manhattan, Kansas. Removal activities ended on October 18, 2005.
The Site is located on a residential property on the southern edge of the City of Manhattan, along Wildcat Creek. It covers 2.3 acres and is home to a family of three. The Site was a former dump for battery casings discarded during lead reclamation processes during the 1940s, and 50s.
BACKGROUND
From 2002 – 2005, assessment activities conducted on the site by EPA and the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) found high concentrations of lead contamination on the property. Soils onsite had lead concentrations reaching 90,000 – 100,000 parts per million (ppm), 100 times the EPA industrial cleanup standard of 1200 ppm.
Historical accounts from residents and other sources indicate that massive amounts of battery casings were disposed of throughout the property by local lead salvage industries in the 1940s and 1950s. The cleanup project removed 14,000 tons of contaminated soils from both the surface and subsurface of the property.
Removal of contamination at the site has eliminated the risk of exposure to elevated lead concentrations in the surface soils on the property. EPA post removal assessment data indicates that no imminent threat to human health and the environment remains at the site.
