SmartWay Transport Partnership
The SmartWay Transport Partnership helps freight companies improve fuel efficiency, increase environmental performance, and increase supply chain sustainability.
Joining SmartWay is *FREE*
and open to all freight shippers, truck carriers (including drayage fleets), logistics companies, multimodal carriers, and rail carriers.
How SmartWay Works
SmartWay partners agree to:
- Assess freight operations;
- Calculate fuel consumption and carbon footprint; and
- Track fuel-efficiency and emission reductions annually.
In exchange, EPA ranks and publicizes partners performance on the SmartWay Partner List. Superior performers earn the SmartWay Partner logo.

How To Become a SmartWay Partner
1. Determine your Partnership Type.
Identify which partnership category applies to your company structure and operating model. Currently there are four types of freight transport companies that are eligible to join SmartWay:
- Freight shippers
- Logistics companies (including 3PLs/4PLs)
- Rail carriers
- Truck carriers
- Drayage truck carriers
- Mult-modal carriers
2. Complete your SmartWay Partnership Agreement and FLEET Tool.
3. Submit your SmartWay Partnership Agreement and FLEET Tool to EPA for evaluation and approval.
Other Ways to Participate in SmartWay
Non-profits, dealers, and truck stops that encourage their members to join the partnership, may be eligible to participate as SmartWay Affiliates. All other organizations that support the goals of SmartWay can join the SmartWay Community.
