Interagency Group on Insular Affairs
On August 9, 1999, President Clinton issued a Memorandum for executive departments and agencies, creating the Interagency Group on Insular Areas ("IGIA") to foster cooperation with the governments of the US territories of American Samoa, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Guam and the US Virgin Islands.
The IGIA's goal is to improve government-to-government relations and coordination between the federal government and the Governors of the insular areas by:
- assisting insular areas in achieving sustainable economic growth with the sound management of natural resources; and
- improving the general welfare of insular areas (consistent with US indicators)
