The Very Old and Wise Osage Orange Tree

Intergenerational Description

This contest is a great way to remember Rachel Carson and honor her life’s work!  Silent Spring is on Wade’s reading list for this summer. We both have an appreciation for trees/forests and the extremely important role they play in the interdependent web of life. We selected an incredible tree to photograph that just happens to be a local landmark in our community. Indeed we have visited this tree many times at the Old Fort Harrod State Park in Harrodsburg, KY.

Celebration of Rachel Carson’s Sense of Wonder

Since this amazing Osage Orange tree is estimated to be around 225 years old, we like to imagine all the people that have walked by and perhaps noticed and hopefully admired this tree including Native Americans, pioneers, entrepreneurs from the industrial age, and tourists from all over the world. It looks rather tired with some of its huge branches literally growing along the ground. We think it is a wonderfully wise tree with many stories to tell to all who will sit quietly and just listen . . .
