Brief Summary: The Berkeley-Charleston-Dorchester Council of Governments proposes a project to work with older adults to demonstrate how smart growth activities can be incorporated into the communities to improve the quality of life for the aging population while also improving environmental quality. This project will hold training workshops which will give participants the opportunity to create a vision for their communities using smart growth strategies. Learning the tools and strategies for more sustainable development patterns will encourage older adults and retirees to become environmental leaders in their communities and involved in planning and development issues that will make a difference where they live.
Environmental Outcomes: Groundwater management will be improved. Air quality will improve due to reductions in vehicular miles traveled. Greater preservation of critical habitat and open space is expected to occur. Clean-up and re-use of Brownfields is also expected to be an environmental outcome.
