Aging and Public Health—Rural and Environment Award (Revised for 2011 submissions)
We would like to call your attention to a new award sponsored by the Aging and Public Health Section of the American Public Health Association. The purpose of the award is to recognize individuals in public health research who have made a significant difference to understanding the impact that rural location and/or environment have on aging and public health. Research can focus on rural issues and environment issues separately or jointly on both areas. An overriding goal of the award program is to recognize individuals and their research efforts that have the potential to improve the health and functional status of older people. Abstracts (see below) are due February 11, 2011.
Rural, Aging and Public Health: There is interest in understanding the meaning and consequences of living in rural communities. Papers can focus solely on rural health or conduct rural-urban comparisons. Examples of possible topics include but are not limited to:
- How policy and rural factors influence the rural disparities in health and functioning of aging individuals.
- How to develop, combine, or alter health and social services to reduce rural disparities in health and functioning or aging individuals.
- How to alter policy and/or rural factors to reduce rural disparities in health and functioning of aging individuals
For Environment, Aging and Public: There is interest in understanding the context and consequences of environments, as well as how smart growth and aging principles
might be merged to create healthier communities for active aging. Examples of possible topics include but are not limited to:
- How the physical and built environment directly influences health outcomes for aging individuals
- How environmental factors may mediate the impact of different interventions for aging individuals
- How to alter environmental factors to improve health and functioning of older adults.
The criteria for selection are: 1) the importance of the topic; 2) relevance of the findings to address practice or policy issues, 3) rigor of the design, analysis and conclusions; 4) quality of writing; and 5) potential benefit to the field. Additionally, the abstract/papers must make the link to the award topic explicit (e.g., go beyond a demographic or epidemiologic study of rural Americans to understand the nature and meaning of rurality for adults as they age).
Candidates are identified in response to the APHA/A&PH Call for Abstracts. Following a preliminary screening of abstracts eligible for this Award, a journal-sized article and curriculum vitae are requested from the finalists.
