Module 2: Characteristics of Gases - Flow Rate - Answers

Q icon #1
Do collectors A and B process the same amount (pound moles) of combustion gas per minute? See Figure 2.

Figure 2

  1. Yes
  2. No
  3. Cannot be determined

Answer: b. No

Solution:

Start with the following rearranged version of the ideal gas law:

equation 1a

This equation is identical to the following equation where units of time have been introduced to both sides of the equation. This new equation states that the number of moles per minute (molar flow rate) is equivalent to the gas volume per minute times (P/RT). The gas volume per minute is simply the gas flow rate.

equation 1b

Case A, solving for number of moles/minute:

equation 1c

Case B, solving for number of moles/minute:

equation 1d

Case B, which operates at a higher temperature than Case A, processes fewer moles of combustion gas per minute than Case A does.
