Microbial Commercial Activity Notice (MCAN) for modified Escherichia coli and Klebsiella oxytoca from Verenium Corporation, J08-00001 and J08-0002

On May 14, 2008, the Office of Pollution Prevention and Toxics (OPPT) received a consolidated Microbial Commercial Activity Notice (MCAN) from Verenium Corporation, submitted under the biotechnology regulations promulgated under the Toxic Substances Control Act (62 FR 17910 (April 11, 1997)), codified at 40 C.F.R. Part 725. The MCANs were given the EPA tracking designation J08-0001 and J08-0002. The recipient microorganism for J08-0001 is an Escherichia coli W, and the name for the new microorganism is E. coli BD26981. The recipient microorganism for J08-0002 is Klebsiella oxytoca M5a1, and the name for the new microorganism is K. oxytoca BD26985. Both microorganisms will be used for the conversion of lignocellulosic biomass sugars to fuel grade ethanol.
