2011 EPA New England Coastal Survey

Science to Decisions from the OSV Bold
This week, scientists from EPA, Maine Department of Environmental Protection, University of New England, and the Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve completed a water sampling effort along the southern coast of New England. Why?
Many asked when we were in Ipswich Bay off Essex, Massachusetts. We were thrilled that boaters took interest to the big blue ship; cautiously, but curiously approaching when we stopped to send down equipment. During boat to boat conversations from the back deck, they said they had never seen anything like the Bold before. It was a great opportunity to explain firsthand what we were doing, and why we have this research ship. When I said we were sampling water quality along the coastline they asked, "Is it ok for swimming?"

2009 New England Coastal Survey
Between July 30th - August 4th, 2009, 13 EPA scientists worked aboard the OSV Bold on a nutrient survey from Boston Harbor to Penobscot Bay in midcoast Maine. Check out the daily logbook and photos!
Overall, EPA collected approximately 200 water samples in coastal Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine, with special attention in Penobscot Bay, Massachusetts Bay and southern Maine. Analyzing these samples helps tell us about how healthy this coastal water is, and if we are doing the right things to protect the environment.

Based on water sampling that was done in 2004 and 2005, EPA will revisit those areas to compare past results with current water quality conditions. EPA will sample stations R1-1 through R1-25, plus additional areas within Penobscot Bay if time allows.

EPA is partnering with the Maine Department of Environmental Protection (ME DEP) to help collect water samples from deeper areas within Penobscot Bay.
