Brownfields Job Training Program Graduates are Skilled Environmental Professionals
EPA Brownfields Job Training grantees implement environmental workforce development programs throughout the country, tailoring their training programs to the needs of local communities. Job Training program graduates have successfully contributed to the green economy since EPA's program began in 1995.
Most Job Training graduates complete training in the following areas:
- Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response Standard (HAZWOPER)(Required for all Job Training grants)
- Removing and handling hazardous substances such as asbestos, lead-based paint, and mold
- Environmental site technician certification for techniques and methods for cleanup of hazardous substances, petroleum, pollutants, and sites contaminated with controlled substances (e.g. meth labs)
- Sampling soil and groundwater to test for contamination
- Confined space entry
- Demolition or debris removal and recycling
- Environmental health and safety
Examples of additional specialized training, depending on the geographic area, include:
- Green remediation such as phytoremediation, bioremediation, or soil amendments
- Preparation of sites for the installation of alternative energy technologies, such as wind or solar
- Ecological restoration, including botanical, horticultural, landscaping, soil science, and stormwater management training
- Construction of caps, synthetic barriers, pumping stations, and other structures to remediate contamination
- Disaster site worker, NIMS and emergency response
- Vapor intrusion monitoring
- Environmental chemistry
- Site surveying, inventorying, mapping, GPS and geographic information systems (GIS)
- Requirements to conduct all appropriate inquiry and due diligence
- First aid and CPR
- Heavy machinery operations, forklift operator and commercial driver's license (CDL)
