Maryland Standby Rates Workshop

The Mid-Atlantic CHP Application Center held a workshop on partial service/standby rates on December 19, 2007, in Baltimore, Maryland. This workshop explored issues that might be brought forward to the Maryland Public Service Commission.

BBI Biofuels Workshop & Trade Show Series
Western Conference: October 9-11, 2007, Portland, Oregon
Eastern Conference: November 28-30, 2007, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
For current and future biofuels producers, industry suppliers, marketers, feedstock producers, policymakers, government officials, researchers and members of academia.
The BBI Biofuels Workshop & Trade Show Series focused on near-term development of commercial-scale ethanol and biodiesel production, and provided information and expertise that specifically targeted regional challenges and opportunities for further development of the biofuels industry.
CHP Partnership Team Leader Kim Crossman spoke at the conference to discuss how CHP can provide significant energy savings for the biofuels industry and outline opportunities for CHP in utility-biofuel facility partnerships.

U.S. Combined Heat & Power Association's Annual Meeting
October 2-4, 2007, Arlington, Virginia.
For all types of CHP systems.
The U.S. Combined Heat and Power Association (USCHPA) brought together diverse market interests to promote the growth of clean, efficient CHP in the United States.
USCHPA's annual meeting was a chance to discusses and receive current information on national and state policies affecting CHP system implementation and development. Speakers scheduled to present at the conference included Representatives from Congress, CHP business leaders, and CHP Partnership Team Member Tom Frankiewicz. Third Annual Waste Heat to Power Workshop
September 25- 26, 2007, Houston, Texas
For industry stakeholders and industrial end users considering CHP.
The Third Annual Waste Heat to Power Workshop included an overview of the concept of "recycling energy," a segment on the economics of waste heat-to-power technologies, a discussion of the financial and legal aspects of utilizing waste heat for power, industry presentations, and site visits.
This two-day event was organized by the U.S. Department of Energy, Gulf Coast CHP Regional Application Center (RAC), Pacific Region CHP RAC, Northwest CHP RAC, Texas State Energy Conservation Office, and Texas Industries of the Future.

Fourth Annual Advanced Stationary Reciprocating Engines Conference
September 18-19, 2007, Downey, California
For CHP systems using stationary reciprocating engines as prime movers.
This workshop focused on stationary reciprocating engines from both a technical and policy perspective, and emphasize business- and emissions-related issues specific to California. The workshop covered a wide spectrum of reciprocating engine issues such as using alternative fuels, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and utilizing high-efficiency technology.
The conference was held at the Southern California Gas Company's Energy Resources Center in Downey, California.

Combustion, Cooling, & Energy Conservation Workshop
June 27, 2007, Cambridge, Massachusetts
This workshop outlined energy management and the use of CHP for industrial facilities, businesses, and institutions such as universities and hospitals. The workshop covered ways business and organizations can reduce their electricity demand by proper sizing, operation, and control of heating and cooling equipment, including the use of CHP. The conference also included a tabletop Vendor Fair that featured innovative companies/organizations that provide technical assistance for CHP or vendors of energy-saving products and services.

2007 Fuel Ethanol Workshop & Expo
June 26-28, 2007, Saint Louis, Missouri
The International Fuel Ethanol Workshop & Expo (FEW) has a long history of creating a forum for the ethanol industry to exchange valuable information and ideas to help improve ethanol production and operation. More than 5,000 individuals attended the 2007 conference.
The CHP Partnership was a title sponsor of FEW, where EPA presented on the energy savings that CHP can provide for the ethanol industry and outlined opportunities for CHP in utility-ethanol facility partnerships. In addition, EPA Region 7 Administrator, Mr. John Askew, presented two ENERGY STAR® CHP Awards to ethanol facilities utilizing highly-efficient CHP systems.

2007 Northeast Combined Heat and Power Initiative's Annual Conference

The Northeast regional CHP community was a great opportunity to learn from and network with energy experts, policy makers, end users, engineers, and other CHP professionals. This one-day event featured the latest policy initiatives, incentives, new technologies, Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, and environmental regulation.
This year's conference featured information on new CHP incentives, policy initiatives, and industry developments, as well as important speakers within the CHP policy community such as Connecticut Department of Public Utility Control Chairman Don Downes.

California BioEnergy: The Path to Market Transformation
April 18-20, 2007, Napa, CA
CHP for waste-to-energy, biogas, farmers and food processors.
This workshop highlighted the latest market and regulatory trends in waste-to-energy technology and project implementation. Different waste-to-energy technologies, systems, and opportunities were explored during the conference, including CHP for the farm and food processing industries. In addition, speakers discussed different grants and tax advantages available for biofuel and biomass investment for these industries.
The workshop also included a site visit to the University of California, Davis, for a briefing on the new UC Davis Energy Efficiency Center and tour of the 5 kilowatt food-waste digester on campus.

United States Combined Heat and Power Association Advocacy Day
April 16-17, 2007, Washington, D.C.
CHP for any technology type, fuel source, or sector.
United States Combined Heat and Power Association (USCHPA) hosted a national advocacy day for CHP industry members. The purpose of the meeting was to communicate the CHP industry's viewpoints on current issues that impact the clean distributed generation industry with key legislators in Washington DC. The meeting included an overview of objectives and talking points, specific training on the advocacy process, and face-to-face advocacy with relevant congressional staff.

POWER-GEN Renewable Energy and Fuels
March 6-9, 2007, Las Vegas, Nevada
CHP for project developers, consultants, engineers, and financiers.
The POWER-GEN conference brought different renewable industries together for three days of information exchange and fast-track networking. Participants from the wind, solar, biomass and fuels, hydro, and geothermal sectors attended. Conference topics include the current technical, strategic, regulatory, structural, and economic issues surrounding the renewable energy industry.

83rd Annual Outlook Forum—Agriculture at the Crossroads: Energy, Farm & Rural Policy
March 1-2, 2007, Arlington, Virginia
CHP for agricultural industry, farmers, and project developers using opportunity fuels.
This forum was sponsored by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and focused on the intersection of agriculture and energy production. Topics covered in the 2007 Forum included: the 2007 farm bill from the USDA perspective, the United States' potential for biofuels, and expanding United States agricultural production through international trade with developing countries. The conference was also an excellent networking opportunity, with an attendance of 1,500 individuals.

International District Energy Association (IDEA) 20th Annual Campus Energy Conference

CHP for Universities, Utility Leaders, and Other Large Facilities.
Attendees at the IDEA 20th Annual Campus Energy Conference were presented with an excellent opportunity to exchange experiences related to providing best-in-class university energy services. Presentations and panel discussion topics included: master planning, combined heat and power, thermal storage and operational techniques, and others. The conference featured technical topics and panel discussions focusing on the unique needs and multiple disciplines for campus energy professionals.
At the IDEA Conference, the CHP Partnership announced a new report on environmental revenue streams for CHP projects and presented 2007 ENERGY STAR CHP Awards to two university recipients.

Renewable Fuels Association (RFA) 12th Annual National Ethanol Conference: Building New Horizons
February 19-21, 2007, Tucson, Arizona
CHP Potential in the Ethanol Industry.
Hailed as the "premier event in which industry leaders and experts meet to discuss and shape the future of the U.S. ethanol industry," the Renewable Fuels Association 12th Annual Conference brought approximately 2,000 attendees in 2007. The conference centered on policy that affect the ethanol industry, such as the renewable fuels standard, as well as technological improvements for current ethanol facilities.

Waste to Energy Workshop for the Ohio Livestock & Food Processing Industries
January 31, 2007, Wooster, Ohio
CHP for the Farm and Food Processing Industries.
The Ohio Department of Development, Office of Energy Efficiency hosted a one-day workshop that informed and educated Ohio's farm and food processing industries on:
- The role of anaerobic digestion in reducing air, water, and land quality impacts
- Integrating CHP technologies with anaerobic digesters
- Available digester and CHP technologies
- Case studies of existing installations
- How to obtain further assistance in evaluating these technologies for your facilities
