Size of AwardThe Tax Relief and Health Care Act of 2006 was approved on December 20, 2006. The Act will extend federal tax credits for renewable energy and energy efficiency projects. More specifically, the Act will extend the production tax credit for electricity generated by geothermal, wind power, biomass, landfill gas, trash combustion, and small irrigation power through 2008. A tax credit will be extended for homeowners and businesses that buy fuel cells, for energy efficiency improvements to commercial buildings and other energy efficiency or renewable projects.

The Act also will continue the Clean Renewable Energy Bonds program through 2008. The annual amount of tax credit bonds will be increased to $1.2 billion. Cellulosic ethanol plants placed in service by 2012 will be eligible for special tax allowances. The Act lengthens a research and development tax credit, which aids businesses in investing in new technologies.
