Critical InformationMichigan's public benefits fund, known as the Low-Income and Energy Efficiency Fund (LIEEF) allocates grants for projects that assist low-income households with their energy needs. These grants, titled Low Income Energy Assistance Grants (LIEAG), are administered by the Michigan Public Service Commission and $50 million was made available for the June 2007 request for proposals.

To be eligible to receive a LIEAG, the applicant must meet the following eligibility requirements:
- Applicants must be a non-profit or public organization (governmental agency) offering service to low-income residents in Michigan.
- The funds requested must supplement, not substitute for, existing funding.

Guidelines require 75 percent of LIEEF funding to go towards grants for energy efficiency projects and energy assistance for low-income residents, while 25 percent will go toward grants for energy efficiency projects to support all customer classes. The following types of renewables/technologies are eligible for funding: photovoltaics, wind, CHP, anaerobic digestion, fuel cells, and biomass.
