Additional InformationIn 2006, Rhode Island enacted legislation that allows the PUC to establish standards for net metering. In July 2007, Rhode Island enacted legislation (2007 RI H.B. 5566) temporarily increasing the capacity limit on an individual net-metered energy system to 1.65 megawatts (MW) for renewable-energy systems owned by cities, towns or the Narragansett Bay Commission, and to 1 MW for systems owned by other customers. In addition, the limit on the aggregate capacity of all net-metered systems was temporarily raised from 1 MW to 5 MW. Of the 5-MW limit, 1 MW is reserved for systems less than 25 kW. (The July 2007 amendments are set to expire January 1, 2010. The PUC must report by July 1, 2010, on the status of net metering, and whether the amendments specified in 2007 RI H.B. 5566 are "optimally cost-effective, reliable, prudent and environmentally responsible.")
