Computer Forensics

The EPA Criminal Enforcement Program’s National Computer Forensics Laboratory (NCFL) provides Special Agents with computer forensics support, internet investigative support, and technical investigative equipment support. These services are also made available to our Federal, State, Local, Tribal and International environmental law enforcement partners when needed to support joint investigations of environmental crimes.

Activities

NCFL Special Agents seize electronic information during the execution of search warrants and subsequently search that information for evidence of the crime under investigation. They also search, collect and store evidence from the internet that is relevant to criminal investigations. NCFL Special Agents assist during the execution of search warrants, with the seizure of computer, electronic or other digital evidence, and their subsequent forensic analysis. The NCFL also provides Special Agents with advice and assistance in the selection and deployment of technical investigative equipment.

Staff

NCFL is staffed with Special Agents who are trained and experienced in the seizure and forensic analysis of electronic evidence, conducting internet investigations, and the use of technical investigative equipment. NCFL Agents collaborate with other specially–trained Special Agent team members located in each of EPA’s ten regions to deploy the best suite of tools and capabilities for each investigation. In addition, the NCFL, through an assigned criminal enforcement program attorney, provides Special Agents with legal advice in the rapidly evolving area of technology and the law.
