Environmental impacts caused by the mineral processing and mining sectors are significant.  The mineral processing sector and mining sectors cumulatively generate larger volumes of wastes that are corrosive and/or contain toxic metals than any other industrial sector.  Over the past decade, EPA has found that many of the facilities that manage these wastes, due either to noncompliance with state or federal environmental requirements or legally permissible waste management practices, have contaminated groundwater, surface water, soil, and sediment.  Since the start of this priority in fiscal year 2005, there has been an 80% significant noncompliance rate discovered from the investigations completed to date.
