The Design for the Environment (DfE) Program forms voluntary partnerships with industry and other stakeholders to incorporate environmental considerations -- especially Green Chemistry -- into the design of products. The Program conducts hazard-based Chemical Alternatives Assessment and allows use of EPA's DfE logo on products that meet stringent human health and environmental criteria. Created in 1992, DfE is working with industry and other relevant stakeholders to:
    • conduct hazard-based Chemical Alternatives Assessments and Life Cycle Assessments;
    • develop criteria that defines safer chemistry by functional class based on hazard characteristics;
    • explore safer chemistry for the electronics industry;
    • find safer flame retardants for a range of applications, including autos, airplanes buildings, and furniture;
    • work with companies to develop safer chemical products, such as cleaning products for home and industrial use.
Interns will assist staff in developing policy and conducting research for the Safer Product Labeling Program and Chemical Alternatives Assessments. Work can include:
    • researching technologies and chemistries;
    • summarizing office knowledge on technical topics;
    • database development;
    • contributing to policy development; and
    • writing and presenting summaries of technical information.
Ideal candidates will be graduate students pursuing degrees in environmental science, chemistry, biology, toxicology, environmental policy, social sciences, or communications. Candidates with degrees or experience in database development, website design, and graphic design are also encouraged to apply.
