The number of successful cross-boundary aquatic species transfers,
especially between Eastern Europe (Pont-Caspian region) and Western Europe
(Baltic Sea) and North America (Great Lakes), appears to be increasing in
frequency. This financial support will provide for a special session or
workshop on the Ponto-Caspian-Baltic-Great Lakes invasive species
connection, to be held in Copenhagen, Denmark, in June 2000. The goal is
to bring together a broad, international group of scientists from Europe
and North America to examine existing and emerging aquatic species
invasion mechanisms and pathways to the Great Lakes, and to form
collaboration for continued studies and information exchange between Great
Lakes and European scientists. |
