| Community Profile Clayton is best described as a vibrant, secure suburban community with a metropolitan flair. It provides unequaled municipal services and is recognized as one of the most desirable communities in which to live and work in the St. Louis metropolitan area. Clayton has always been a leader in environmental initiatives, and participating in the Green Power Community challenge was a step in maintaining that leadership. In April 2010, the City launched the challenge to turn 2 percent of the community’s energy consumption into renewable energy credits (RECs) by Earth Day 2011. In March 2011, the City surpassed its goal of 670 megawatt hours (MWh) in RECs using wind and solar energy and became the first GPC in Missouri in April 2011. During the campaign, we learned that engaging our Chamber of Commerce and schools early on was essential to the success of the program. These are powerful allies within our community, and they can help jump-start enthusiasm. The campaign obviously resulted in reduction of the City’s carbon footprint. The conversations about green power and converting our citizens not only increased the support for green power, it also raised awareness among Clayton citizens that working together can affect change. “We are thrilled with the response from the Clayton community in achieving this first in Missouri distinction,” said Mayor Linda Goldstein. “Clayton has been at the forefront of many environmental initiatives, but this one is truly a community achievement. I am impressed not only with the level and breadth of support by our business and residential citizens but more importantly with their true commitment to green power.” | |
