| Community Profile Lake Oswego, a community of 36,000, became an EPA Green Power Community in 2009. A two-month community-wide Green Power Challenge was kicked off in August 2009, with a goal to sign up 300 new residents and businesses to purchase green power from the community's electricity provider. With strong support from Mayor Jack D. Hoffman, the City Council, and the Sustainability Advisory Board, businesses and citizens responded favorably, exceeding the Challenge goals. In total, 336 Lake Oswego residents and 20 businesses signed up for green power during the Challenge. As a result of the Challenge, more than 8 percent of all the power consumed in Lake Oswego comes from green power, reducing C02 emissions equal to more than 4,500 passenger cars annually. The City is committed to adopting, implementing, and maintaining sustainable practices. Since 2005, the City has purchased more than 1.7 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of wind power annually for the water treatment plant, the largest user of electricity from City operations. This green power purchase is enough power to offset approximately 1.5 million pounds of C02 emissions in one year, and is an important strategy in the City's efforts to reduce its greenhouse emissions. | |
