With a population of over 15,000 residents, the City of River Falls is located in northwestern Wisconsin, just 35 minutes from the Twin Cities area. As a result of the “green” culture that exists in River Falls, the city’s wholesale power provider challenged our public power provider, River Falls Municipal Utilities (RFMU), to “lead by example”. In April 2007, RFMU took this on by coordinating and implementing a community-wide effort to instill strong conservation ethics while demonstrating the effectiveness of energy efficiency, conservation, and renewable resource development. As part of this effort, the city purchase green power for its municipal operations and the community as a whole is purchasing more than 16.5 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) annually. In addition to becoming an EPA Green Power Community in 2008, River Falls also signed on as a Wisconsin Office of Energy Independence, Energy Independent Community to support the initiative’s goal to generate 25 percent of the state’s electricity and 25 percent of the fuels from our cars and trucks from renewable sources by the year 2025.
