| Community Profile Located in Oregon's mid Willamette Valley, Salem is home to approximately 160,000 residents, making it the third largest City in Oregon. As Oregon's capital, Salem takes pride in its commitment to sustainability. In 2008, the City launched the Salem Environmental Action Plan to formalize goals and actions aimed at reducing energy, water, fuel and solid waste in its facilities. In 2010, the Salem Energy Strategy was published to extend goals and actions for reducing energy and increasing renewables community-wide. In 2011, the City's first community-wide inventory of energy usage was published. Today, progress continues with ongoing energy monitoring, completion of HVAC and lighting upgrades in City facilities, and a new 90 kw solar installation on the Salem Conference Center. Salem's commitment is strengthened by the many community partners that collaborate to support its actions. In 2010, Salem’s purchase of green power through Portland General Electric’s Clean Wind Program represented approximately five percent of its total energy use. In 2010, green power purchases by Salem residents represented approximately four percent of total energy use. | |
