| Community Profile Washington, D.C. was designated an EPA Green Power Community in 2011, setting a strong example of national leadership in the effort to transform the nation’s energy sources to clean renewables. With more than one billion kilowatt-hours of green power being used by District residents, businesses, institutions and government entities, the District is the largest Green Power Community in the country. Collectively, green power supplies more than eight percent of total electricity use in the District. Upon achieving EPA Green Power Community status, the District of Columbia immediately set a new target of using 10 percent green power by August 2011. "This is a huge honor for Washington, D.C. and we are proud to be recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency," said Mayor Vincent Gray. "The purchase of green power by our citizens and businesses is cleaning our air and supporting growth of the clean energy economy. When we clean the air, we improve the health of our residents, and particularly our children." | |
