10th National Green Power Marketing Conference Highlights Rapid Growth
The 10th National Green Power Marketing Conference took place
in Austin, Texas, October 24-26. During the conference, DOE, EPA,
and the Center for Resource Solutions (CRS) teamed up with five
Green Power Partners—Johnson & Johnson, Safeway, Advanced
Micro Devices (AMD), Whole Foods, and Hyatt Regency Dallas/DFW—to
make announcements about the growth of the green power industry
as reflected in a new National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL)
Report, “Green
Power Marketing in the United States: A Status Report (PDF)” (99
pp, 2.4MB, About
PDF)
as well as the dramatic growth of the Green Power
Partnership. According to the new NREL report, renewable generating
capacity in the United States supported by voluntary green power
purchasing soared from 167 MW in 2000 to more than 2,200 MW by
the end of 2004. The nonresidential market has emerged as the primary
driver of market growth.
Green Power Partnership Tops 4 Million Megawatt Hours, Doubles During Past Year
The Green Power Partnership has grown from 21 founding Partners in 2001 to more than 600 Partners today, including Fortune 500 companies; universities; trade associations; and local, state, and federal government agencies. Green Power Partners are now collectively purchasing more than 4 million megawatt-hours of green power annually, a figure that has doubled over the past year. 2005 National Green Power Leadership Award Winners Honored
During an evening banquet at the recent National Green Power Marketing Conference, EPA and DOE presented 29 awards recognizing leading national green power purchasers and suppliers that have demonstrated leadership through purchasing renewable energy or creating innovative renewable energy supply options. The highest honor in purchasing—the Green Power Partner of the Year Award—was presented to HSBC North America, Johnson & Johnson, the U.S. Air Force, and White Wave Foods Company. Important Notice to Partners Purchasing Green Power in Texas
Recently, the State of Texas passed legislation that increased the requirements of its Renewables Portfolio Standard (RPS). The legislation included a provision that states “all renewable capacity installed in this state and all renewable energy credits awarded, produced, procured, or sold in this state are counted toward the goal.” This provision is likely to enable electricity suppliers to count Texas voluntary green power sales toward their obligation under the RPS.
A voluntary green power purchase should lead to more renewable energy generation than is already required by law. It is this supplementary support for renewable energy that gives voluntary green power purchases their environmental integrity and marketability.
The ultimate effect of this legislation will depend upon the details of its implementation, which will be determined by the Texas Public Utility Commission over the coming months. Depending on how the new legislation is implemented, green power purchased from Texas could be rendered ineligible for the Green Power Partnership. If that is the case, Partners relying on Texas-based green power would need to buy green power from another state.
Currently, the Green Power Partnership is discussing these issues with the Texas Public Utility Commission and will provide updates in subsequent issues of the Green Power Planet.
Partners who have questions should contact Matt Clouse (clouse.matt@epa.gov, 202-343-9004).
