Partnership Surpasses 5 Billion Kilowatt-Hours; 650 Partners

EPA’s Green Power Partnership recently announced that the program has grown to include more than 650 organizations whose green power purchases total more than 5 billion kilowatt-hours (KWh) of renewable electricity annually. The amount of green power being purchased by Partners has doubled from 2005 to 2006 and grown nearly 70 percent since October 2005.

These Partners are playing a significant role in the development and support of new renewable energy facilities. The more than 650 Green Power Partners are purchasing enough clean, renewable energy to power more than 400,000 American homes each year.

EPA to Implement New Program Requirements for Partnership

Due to the increasing demand for large-scale green power purchases by leading U.S. organizations,  EPA will revise and implement new Partnership requirements, effective January 2007. EPA is initiating these changes to keep consistent with the changes in the green power marketplace and to drive additional environmental benefits. EPA periodically updates Partnership requirements to maintain a better than business-as-usual performance level from its Partner organizations.

Corvallis in the News: First Green Power Community in Oregon and West Coast

In May, Corvallis made headlines across Oregon when EPA recognized it as the first Green Power Community in the state. Corvallis is purchasing clean energy at a level high enough to meet EPA’s program requirements and is the first city on the West Coast and only the third city in the nation to achieve this status. Moab, Utah, and Boulder, Colorado, are the other two.

Corvallis business leaders and citizens gathered to celebrate the honor and formally recognize the City of Corvallis. Oregon Governor Ted Kulongoski and Congresswoman Darlene Hooley of Oregon’s 5th Congressional District attended the celebration. Matt Clouse, program director for the Green Power Partnership, presented two colorful road signs to Corvallis city council members. The signs state: “Welcome to a Green Power Community—we exceed EPA guidelines for buying clean, renewable energy.”

To be recognized as a Green Power Community, the City of Corvallis was required to purchase a minimum of 2 percent of the city’s electricity base-load. The city surpassed this minimum requirement by enrolling more than 2,800 residences and 90 businesses. A number of local and regional media covered the event, including Portland TV stations. The story also appeared in local papers throughout the state. Check out some of the recent Corvallis news coverage, as well as coverage about other Partners’ achievements.

If your company or organization has recently been featured in the media, please e-mail press coverage for posting on the Partnership Web site to Cena Swisher (cena.swisher@erg.com, 703-841-0398).

Air Force Maintains No. 1 Position on National Top 25 List Released in April ; Next Update July

EPA released its updated Top 25 list in April, highlighting the largest national purchasers in the Green Power Partnership. Once again, the U.S. Air Force maintained its spot as the top purchaser of green power. Two new Partners made the list: IBM Corporation (No. 10) and Northwestern University (tie for No. 22). Other movement within the list includes Johnson & Johnson claiming the No. 3 spot and the University of Pennsylvania climbing to No. 8 from its previous position, tied for No. 20.

The actions of the Top 25 Partners help to drive the development of new renewable energy sources of electricity generation. Combined, the Top 25 purchases amount to 3.6 billion kilowatt-hours of green power annually. These purchases involve enough renewable energy to power approximately 336,000 homes a year. The Top 25 Partners are also responsible for approximately 73 percent of the green power purchases made by all Partners and provide an excellent example to their peers, customers, employees, and community.

The next Top 25 update will be posted to the EPA Web site in July 2006. All new Partner information or updates about existing Partners must be received by June 26 to be included in the July 2006 update.

Partners with updated green power purchase information for inclusion in the July update should contact Anthony Amato (anthony.amato@erg.com, 617-357-4630).

EPA Releases College and University and Retail Top 10 Lists

On the heels of the Top 25 List, the Green Power Partnership in April released its sector-specific, quarterly national Top 10 lists for college and universities and retailers. These Top 10 lists reflect renewable energy purchases made by members of the Green Power Partnership through March 27, 2006. EPA updates both its National Top 25 list and sector-specific lists of green power purchasers quarterly.

Top 10 College and University Partners List
Topping the list is the University of Pennsylvania, which nearly tripled its previous purchase amount to 112,000 MWh. Second on the list is Northwestern University at 40,000 MWh. Rounding out the top six college and university purchasers of green power are Western Washington University, University of Utah, Syracuse University, and Duke University.

Top 10 Retail Partners List
Leading the retail list is Whole Foods Market, followed in second place by Starbucks. Rounding out the top six purchasers of green power are Safeway Inc., Staples, FedEx Kinko's, and HEB Grocery Company. A newcomer to the list is My Organic Market, reaching No. 10 on the list.

The next Top 10 updates will be posted in July 2006. All new Partner information or updates about existing Partners must be received by June 26 to be included in the July 2006 Top 10 sector lists.

Partners with updated green power purchase information for inclusion in the July update should contact Anthony Amato (anthony.amato@erg.com, 617-357-4630).

Sector Spotlight: Partnership Launches College and University Green Power Challenge

In an effort to bolster green power purchasing among U.S. colleges and universities EPA recently issued its first nationwide College and University Green Power Challenge. Through the challenge, EPA will track and recognize the collegiate athletic conferences with the highest combined green power purchases in the nation.

The College and University Green Power Challenge is open to all U.S. colleges, universities, and conferences. To be eligible, a conference must include at least one Green Power Partner and have an aggregate green power purchase of at least 10,000 megawatt-hours across the conference.

In the summer of 2007, EPA will conclude the Green Power Challenge and recognize each of the single largest purchasers within all eligible conferences, as well as a National Champion Green Power Conference with the highest total aggregate purchase.

The Ivy League and Big Ten are among the nation’s top collegiate conferences currently purchasing green power. For more information, visit the the College and University Green Power Challenge Web site.
