Green Power Planet #2
December 19, 2003

The Green Power Planet provides interested stakeholders the latest information regarding the Green Power Partnership and its Partners. In this edition of the Green Power Planet:

Current Number of Green Power Partners: 227
Current Total Annual Green Power Partnership Commitment: 1,110,607 MWh

Partnership Tops One Billion Kilowatt-Hours

The total annual green power commitment by Green Power Partners now exceeds 1.1 billion kilowatt-hours, roughly the annual output of a 425 MW wind farm. If generated by conventional means, the annual emissions associated with that much electricity would include 1.5 billion pounds of carbon dioxide, which is equal to the annual emissions of about 130,000 cars. The Partnership now includes 12 Fortune 500 companies, 17 higher education institutions, 11 cities, 14 counties, four states, 19 nonprofit organizations, and 21 federal entities—including EPA, which now uses green power for more than 40 percent of its total electricity needs nationwide.

Leading Partners Honored at National Green Power Leadership Awards

On November 4 in Chicago, leading Green Power Partners were honored at the 2003 Green Power Leadership Awards banquet, which took place at the 8th National Green Power Marketing Conference. The Partnership's highest honor, the Partner of the Year Award, went to the University of Pennsylvania, the City of Portland, Dyess Air Force Base, and Johnson & Johnson. Additional award winners for Green Power Purchasing and Onsite Installations included White Wave; Clif Bar; Tower Companies; Kinko's; Austin Grill; the State of New Jersey; the City of Moab, Utah; BMW; Toyota Motor Sales; Fala Direct Marketing; Domaine Carneros; Hayward Lumber; the City of San Diego, CA; and Solano County, CA. EPA also recognized more than 100 Partners that have qualified for the 2003 Green Power Leadership Club.

Green Power Partnership Hosts Partner Forum in Chicago

The Green Power Partnership held its annual Partners' Forum on November 4, immediately following the 2003 Green Power Leadership Awards. This year’s forum included presentations from Partners highlighting how green power commitments have benefited their organizations. Partners sharing their perspectives included Harry Kauffman of Johnson & Johnson, Antonia Ornelas of the City of Chicago, Duncan Seaman of BMW Manufacturing Corporation, Todd Beckman of White Wave, and Lincoln Fowler of Alterra Coffee Roasters. The forum also included a panel chaired by Jennifer Layke of the World Resources Institute on financing strategies to procure green power, including using energy efficiency to finance deals, overcoming high capital requirements through "service" models, leveraging state funds, and aggregating demand. The forum also included presentations about how Partners have financed their purchases, including presentations from Rod Richards of the New Jersey Consolidated Energy Savings Program, Charles Segerman of the Tower Companies, and Mike Zolton of Kinko's. Looking to the future, the Green Power Partnership is examining additional ways to bring Partners together to share experiences and lessons learned. Any comments or suggestions should be directed to Matt Clouse (clouse.matt@epa.gov, 202-343-9004).

Partners Honored at Regional Recognition Events

In addition to the national Green Power Leadership Awards, Partner achievements have also been highlighted at a variety of regional events. In July, Acting EPA Administrator Linda Fisher honored Partners at a conference in Washington, DC. In September, EPA Regional Administrator Wayne Nastri honored San Francisco Bay Area Partners. In October, EPA Regional Administrator John Iani honored Northwest Partners at an awards luncheon held at Nike headquarters. In December, Partners were honored at the 2003 Southeast Green Power Summit.

New Technical Memo on Program Requirements

In response to feedback from Partners and other stakeholders, the Green Power Partnership recently completed a technical memo on Green Power Partnership program requirements. The memo provides details beyond essential program information contained in the Partnership Letter of Intent. The Partnership periodically updates its purchase benchmark in order to ensure that it keeps pace with developments in the marketplace. The Partnership has increased program requirements related to the minimum percentage of green power purchase that must be supplied by new renewable resources. Previously, the Partnership required that 5 percent of a Partner’s green power purchase be supplied by new renewable resources. Now, at least 50 percent of the purchase must be supplied by new renewable energy sources. Partners that have already contracted for green power supply and do not meet the updated requirement may be grandfathered until October 1, 2005. The Partnership is also continuing its collaboration with the Green-e Program, the nation’s leading green power certification and verification program. The Partnership is using Green-e definitions for what constitutes green power. Green-e has adopted the same purchaser recognition benchmark as the Green Power Partnership for customers to use the Green-e logo. Additional information about Green-e is available on the Green-e Web site. Exit EPA Disclaimer Partners with questions about Green Power Partnership program requirements should contact their account manager or Kurt Johnson (johnson.kurt@epa.gov, 202-343-9231).

Communications Guide and Other New Tools Posted on Partnership Web Site

The Green Power Partnership has developed a variety of tools to assist Partners in completing and publicizing their green power purchases—all of which are posted on the Green Power Partnership Web site. Resources include the Procurement Guide, Green Power Locator, Power Profiler, and the new Communications Guide—which provides an overview of how Partners can take advantage of Green Power Partnership communications assistance.
