Partnership Tops 350 Partners
The Green Power Partnership now includes more than 350 Partners, including 110 new Partners since the beginning of January. Collectively, the Green Power Partnership represents commitments to purchase over 1.2 billion kilowatt-hours of green power annually. Recent Partners include Diebold, the Union of Concerned Scientists, and a wide variety of organizations with facilities in Austin, Texas—including the American Lung Association and Intel. Currently, detailed information about Partners' green power purchases is available on the Partnership’s Web site for Award winners and Founding Partners. Coming soon, all Partners will have the option of displaying detailed information about their purchases on the EPA Web site—simply by submitting additional information in the form of a "Partner Snapshot" to their account manager.
Recent Green Power Events Honor Partners’ Leadership
Over the past few months, a number of events have highlighted the achievements of Green Power Partners. In February, college and university Partners were honored at the International District Energy Association’s Campus Energy Conference in San Diego. Many of these Partners were also highlighted in a recent story in the Chronicle of Higher Education.
Also in February, the director of EPA’s Los Angeles Office spoke at a press conference at a trade show for the natural products sector to honor the environmental leadership of natural products companies in the Partnership. One Partner in the natural products sector, White Wave, is putting information about their wind-based renewable energy certificates on their Soymilk cartons—communicating the company’s green power purchase to its customers in the hopes that they can inspire them to also purchase green power. More recently, Sprint World Headquarters held an Earth Day event that included remarks by a local EPA official; a "coal dump" to illustrate the amount of coal that is burned to provide electricity for an average house; and an offer to match employee purchases of wind energy for their homes. Ideas for promoting green power purchases are contained in the Partnership Communications Guide, which contains examples of outreach services that the Partnership provides and sample outreach products developed by Partners. In addition, Partnership account managers are available to assist Partners in developing plans to highlight their green power purchases.
Green Power Market Update
The green power market continues to grow, due in part to the market leadership of Green Power Partners—which comprise the majority of green power demand among commercial, industrial, and institutional customers. Currently, about 50 percent of U.S. electricity customers have direct access to green power through their local utilities or green marketers, and renewable energy certificates are available nationwide. Green-e, the nation’s leading green power certification standard, currently certifies 53 green power products and has 94 participating marketers and utilities. Over 1,000 MW of new renewables capacity has been built to serve demand created by green power customers. Additional updated green power market information is available on the U.S. Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Web site.
Federal Agencies Buying Green Power
The federal government is the nation’s single largest purchaser of green power. Fairchild Air Force Base recently completed the second largest green power purchase by a federal agency, signing a contract for 100 percent of the base’s annual load. The largest federal purchaser is still Dyess Air Force Base (winner of a 2003 Green Power Partner of the Year Award). The U.S. Department of Energy recently increased its annual green power purchase for its headquarters sites (Forrestal and Germantown) from 6.1 million kWh (17 percent of total site electricity use) to 14 million kWh (40 percent of site electricity use).
2004 Green Power Conference and Awards: October 4-6 in Albany, New York
The 2004 Green Power Marketing Conference and Green Power Leadership Awards—the premier national event for the green power industry—will be held in Albany, New York, October 4-6, at the Crowne Plaza Albany Hotel. Information about last year’s award winners is available on the Green Power Partnerhip Web site. Additional details about this year’s conference and Awards— including Awards nomination forms—will be circulated shortly.
