Green Power Partnership Celebrates Third Anniversary, Tops 400 Partners
July 30 marks the third anniversary of the beginning of the Green Power Partnership, launched three years ago with 21 founding Partners to help build demand for green power among commercial and industrial electricity customers. Now the Partnership includes more than 400 Partners collectively purchasing 1.5 billion kilowatt-hours of green power annually, roughly equal to the annual output of a 500 MW wind farm. If generated by conventional means, the emissions associated with this amount of electricity would include more than 2 billion pounds of carbon dioxide, roughly equal to the annual emissions of 180,000 cars. Leading Partners—such as 2003 Partner of the Year winners Johnson & Johnson; the City of Portland, Oregon; Dyess Air Force Base; and the University of Pennsylvania—are blazing a trail for others in their sectors to follow, providing outstanding examples of environmental leadership.
New Partners
Welcome to the following organizations that recently joined the Partnership: Whole Foods Market, Round Rock Independent School District, Dolly Madison Interstate Bakeries, Miller Brewing Company’s Milwaukee Brewery, ReCellular, and Oracle Corporation’s Austin Facilities. Also, congratulations to Whole Foods for becoming the largest corporate purchaser in the Partnership, and congratulations to Odwalla for developing a great Web page describing its green power purchase.
Partner Spotlight: Batdorf & Bronson
A Partner’s good deed yielded an unexpectedly successful marketing benefit. Coffee roaster Batdorf & Bronson donated approximately $59,000 worth of coffee and mugs as a give-away to help encourage utility customers to purchase green power as part of a joint effort among Puget Sound Energy, Snohomish County Public Utility District, and Tacoma Power. Batdorf & Bronson received exposure to more than a million electric utility customers via customized monthly bill inserts, and even broader exposure to the general public through a television commercial airing in Washington State's Puget Sound region. Batdorf & Bronson purchases green tags each year to offset 100 percent of its electricity use, which includes power used by its roasteries in Olympia, Washington and Atlanta, Georgia, as well as its three retail outlets. Additional information is available on the company’s Web site.
Market News: More Than 100 Green Power Providers Offering Green-e Certified Products
The Center for Resource Solutions announced recently that 100 marketers and utilities throughout North America are now offering Green-e certified renewable energy products. Green-e provides independent, third-party certification to ensure renewable energy products meet strict environmental and consumer protection standards. The Green Power Partnership recommends that Partners purchase certified green power products as a matter of best practice in green power procurement. Additional information is available on the Green-e Web site.![]()
