Partner Spotlight: Colleges Making the Grade with Green Power

More than 30 colleges and universities have joined the Partnership and committed to purchase more than 190,000 MWh of green power. Two Green Power Leadership Award winners—the University of Pennsylvania and Penn State—are featured on the Top 25 Partners list. Harvard University recently decided to combine numerous smaller purchases around its campus in order to join the Partnership at the entity-wide level. Its green power purchase of nearly 7.5 percent of the entire university system is likely to earn it a spot on the next quarterly release of EPA’s Top 25 Partner list in April. More information about the green power purchases of colleges and universities can be found in the Partnership higher education fact sheet.

2005 Green Power Leadership Awards: Monday, October 24, in Austin, Texas

The 2005 Green Power Leadership Awards will be presented at the 10th National Green Power Marketing Conference, taking place October 24-26, 2005, in Austin, Texas. This year's conference will celebrate and build on a decade of success by examining the growth of green power markets, with particular emphasis on communicating "best practices" for product design and marketing, as well as on program implementation.

Renewable Energy Certificate Report

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory recently released a new report, “Emerging Markets for Renewable Energy Certificates: Opportunities and Challenges (PDF),” (76 pp, 2MB, About PDF) which covers issues that may be of interest to Partners. The report analyzes the emerging market for RECs, including sections on the history of RECs, market applications of RECs, market volume and prices, and key challenges in expanding REC markets. The report is recommended reading for anyone considering a large REC purchase.

Opportunity for Massachusetts Green Power Buyers

A new program for organizations interested in buying green power for their Massachusetts operations was recently announced by the Center for Resource Solutions (CRS) and Think Energy, Inc. The program, the Massachusetts Renewable Energy Purchasers Program (MREP), will help large businesses and institutions in Massachusetts purchase green power. Twenty-eight organizations in Massachusetts have joined, representing more than 400,000 megawatt-hours of electricity demand. Over the next few months, MREP will provide an opportunity for large energy buyers to learn about the green power market, investigate different green power purchasing opportunities, aggregate their purchasing power, and obtain the best terms and services from renewable energy vendors. For more information about how large organizations with facilities in Massachusetts can participate, contact CRS or Think Energy.

Green-e Report Shows Increase in Certified Green Power Sales

The Center for Resource Solutions (CRS) has released its annual verification report documenting sales of Green-e certified renewable electricity for 2003. Green-e renewable electricity sales totaled 2.9 million MWh in 2003, a 76 percent increase over 2002. Sales of certified RECs experienced the greatest growth, reaching 1.8 million MWh, which represents a twelve-fold increase over 2002. In all, 102 companies offered 65 unique Green-e renewable electricity or TRC products in 2003, with nearly 94,000 customers purchasing one of these products. Copies of the 2003 Green-e Verification Report are available on the Green-e Web site on the “Verification Results” page.

EPA Launches New State Clean Energy Partnerships

EPA recently launched two new clean energy partnerships with states. EPA and the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners announced formation of the EPA-State Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Projects on February 16. Utility commissioners from five states—Arkansas, Connecticut, Hawaii, Minnesota, and New Mexico—plus the District of Columbia, are participating in the projects, which will focus on advancing electricity market policies that level the playing field between traditional investments in wires and generation and energy efficiency, renewable energy, and clean distributed generation. EPA also launched the new Clean Energy-Environment State Partnership Program with 10 states: California, Connecticut, Georgia, Minnesota, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Texas. Under this new voluntary program, EPA will assist states to integrate energy and environmental policies as they develop and implement action plans to improve air quality, decrease energy use, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and enhance economic development. Visit EPA’s Clean Energy Web site for more information on these partnerships.
