Adventist Healthcare, an integrated health-care delivery organization based in Rockville, Maryland, is one of the largest employers in the state with multiple health-care facilities. In March 2010, the organization announced it had successfully reduced its future carbon footprint and saved on electrical costs for seven facilities in Maryland and one in New Jersey using an online reverse energy auction platform. The organization was able to purchase 10 percent green energy and reduce its carbon dioxide emissions by 4,100 metric tons annually. Adventist Healthcare realized it needed to take its multiple electricity contracts and turn them into a single, structured procurement event that would attract the regions’ top suppliers, spur aggressive bidding and yield transparent pricing. As a result, Adventist HealthCare secured favorable contracts that will allow the organization to focus more of its financial resources on patient care while significantly greening its portfolio. "The money we have saved will help us invest in long-term energy efficiency initiatives while advancing our overall mission of providing quality care to our patients,” said William G. “Bill” Robertson, President and CEO of Adventist HealthCare.
