Partner Profile
The American Geophysical Union (AGU) is the world’s largest organization of Earth and space scientists, with more than 60,000 members in over 148 countries. AGU provides a collaborative forum for the geophysical community through scientific journals, meetings, a weekly news service, scientific and technical committees, and online data and information services.

AGU researchers in many fields – global environmental change, atmospheric sciences, hydrology, ocean sciences, and others – observe and investigate in their studies unwelcome consequences from polluting, nonrenewable power sources, leading to greater awareness and understanding of those effects.

AGU is committed to implementing sustainability practices that will lessen the impact of its events on the planet. The organization purchases renewable energy to cover all of its energy use. Additionall, the organization holds a meeting each year in the fall, which has grown to more than 18,000 attendees and takes place annually. The meeting derives power from one of the nation’s largest municipally owned solar generation installations, operating from the roof of the convention center. Among other sustainability measures implemented at the meeting are: use of recycled materials and corn-based plastics, running conference buses on biodiesel fuels, and encouraging meeting attendees to use mass transit.
