Bentley University is one of the nation's leading business schools, dedicated to preparing a new kind of business leader; one with the deep technical skills, a broad global perspective and high ethical standards required to make a difference in an ever-changing world. Bentley knows that sustainability is part of the future of business so we teach students how to think critically about resource conservation and climate change. Our major commitment is to be a carbon-neutrality campus by 2030. This goal includes 50 percent reduction in greenhouse gases by 2015 and 70 percent reduction by 2020.
With the understanding that 50 percent of the university’s carbon footprint is generated from the electricity use the Facilities Management department has taken on an aggressive schedule of energy efficiency upgrades. Heating, cooling and lighting is controlled throughout most campus spaces using a state-of-the-art energy management system. The Office of Sustainability educates the community on energy and climate change and together with Facilities Management worked to purchase 25 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of wind power via third-party certified renewable energy certificates (RECs) using money saved through energy efficiency projects. The green power purchase accounts for the campus’ total annual electricity use, thus cutting Bentley’s carbon footprint in half two years ahead of its 2015 goal.
