Best Buy is a multinational retailer of technology and entertainment products and services with a commitment to growth and innovation, with operations in the United States, Canada, Europe, China, and Mexico. In 2012, Best Buy purchased renewable energy certificates (RECs) representing the generation of more than 150 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of renewable energy. In addition to helping its new stores become LEED certified, RECs are an incremental way to offset Best Buy's Scope 2 emissions and help our communities move toward sustainable energy creation and a low carbon economy. Best Buy's efforts to reduce its environmental impact include programs like the High Performance Building Program, in which new store design features include the use of skylights, low VOC paints and cleaning supplies, and low-flow water fixtures, while also using LEED guidelines to measure success. Best Buy focuses on providing tools, information and process improvements to its employees, as well as designing innovative approaches to reduce fleet fuel use & in store plug loads. In 2010, Best Buy received an award from the EPA Climate Leaders program for achieving its 8 percent carbon reduction goal by 2012 per square foot over a 2005 baseline. In 2010, Best Buy announced a new 20 by 20 Carbon Reduction Goal and aims to reduce CO2e absolute emissions for its U.S. operations by 20 percent by the year 2020.
