As a signatory to the Presidents’ Climate Commitment, Bunker Hill Community College (BHCC) supports the efforts of college and university presidents around the country to address the critical issue of climate neutrality. Fundamental to the College’s climate action plan submitted on Sep. 15, 2009, is the commitment by the institution to become carbon neutral by the year 2050. As outlined in this plan, the BHCC Presidents' Climate Commitment & Sustainability Committee determined the key contributors to its greenhouse gas emissions and helped develop five comprehensive strategies that will eventually reduce the College’s carbon footprint to zero. As it embarks on this challenging process, the College is purchasing renewable energy credits (RECs) equivalent to 100 percent of its electricity use. This purchase has allowed it to reduce its carbon footprint by more than 60 percent. Bunker Hill Community College has also adopted a green building policy and has achieved LEED Gold certification for its Health & Wellness Center, a 48,000-square-foot structure housing the College's nursing and health professions programs. The new facility is one of only two LEED Gold certified buildings in the fifteen campus Massachusetts community college system. This building symbolizes its commitment to a more sustainable future.
