The City of Las Vegas Sustainability Energy Strategy was adopted in part to develop the City’s renewable energy portfolio, reduce carbon emissions, and reduce overall utility costs. The City currently utilizes 3.3 megawatts of solar photovoltaic at its wastewater treatment plant. This single axis tracking system offsets 20 percent of the electricity needs of the facility, and a full six percent of the City’s total energy use. This reduced usage saves the City approximately $600,000 per year. The project has also generated excitement in the community about the benefits of solar power and demonstrates solar’s cost effectiveness and advantages in the desert southwest. During the dedication ceremony, Mayor Carolyn Goodman said, “It’s all about sustainability for the city and our citizens to make sure that we’re using every resource that we can to keep down the costs of energy.”
