Green Power Partnership
|City of Watervliet, NY|
|Organization Type||Govt. (Local, Municipal)|
|Percentage Green Power||10.0%|
The City of Watervliet joined the Green Power Partnership in 2010 with onsite solar PV installations at the Hudson Shores Park, the Senior Center and on the fire station. Watervliet is also a leader in promoting renewable energy generation through its Climate Action Plan and the 10% Energy Challenge, which includes an opportunity for every home and business in the City to support a Green Power Community program. “Climate change is not a problem Watervliet can solve alone,” Mayor Mike Manning said, “but we believe we can trim our greenhouse gas emissions by 10 percent below 2008 levels by 2014 through the combination of renewable energy, energy efficiency and waste management.” Watervliet has made great strides toward making the city more green by doubling recycling collections, engaging an energy performance contractor for city operations and doubling the generation of hydro-electric power from the city’s municipal reservoir. Based on the success of a pilot program that diverted 5,765 pounds of organic waste from the city’s waste stream, Watervliet is working to secure grant funding to purchase its own anaerobic digester that would support more renewable energy to City operations.
