Goshen College has a long history of sustainability work and education. In 2007, President Jim Brenneman signed the Presidents’ Climate Initiative, which commits Goshen College to work toward climate neutrality.
"We did that because we are very concerned about life on this planet, it was one more way we can care for the world and it was part of our broader ecological stewardship commitment," Brenneman said. "Goshen College, like the Mennonite Church which we are a part of, has always been committed to being global citizens. The roots of this ecological stewardship journey at Goshen College is Christian faith and the belief that God calls us to care for all of creation."
Goshen College seeks to be a leader in environmental sustainability and to model a safe and effective way for society to move from dependency on fossil fuel-based energy sources that have proven to be so destructive to the environment. Since 2005, the college has reduced consumption of natural gas by 27% and electricity by 32%. By agreeing to purchase 100% of its electricity from renewable sources, Goshen College will reduce its remaining carbon footprint by about 45%.
