Goucher College is a selective, independent, coeducational institution in Baltimore dedicated to the interdisciplinary traditions of the liberal arts and a broad international perspective on education. Goucher purchases renewable energy certificates (RECs) to match 100 percent of the college's projected electricity consumption for the next three years. Goucher's RECs come from wind energy sources certified by an independent verification program for renewable energy. Goucher is committed to promoting environmental sustainability on campus and in the greater community. The college has embarked on a far-reaching campaign to promote environmental sustainability through both its co-curricular activities and its academic programs, as well as in its day-to-day operations. Additionally, Goucher's Facilities Management Services has pioneered efforts to conserve energy and lessen the college's environmental impact. Among its many projects, FMS has built specialized heating and cooling plants; changed over interior and exterior lights on cmpus to LEDs; has replaced and installed motion detectors for room lighting, faucets, and flush valves; uses Energy Star appliances as much as possible; and has installed energy-efficient materials, such as fluorescent bulbs, in campus buildings. "Environmental sustainability is a major component of Goucher's latest Strategic Plan, approved by the Board of Trustees in October 2011, and purchasing RECs is an important step in fulfilling our commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions," said President Sanford J. Ungar.
