In 2011, the Portland Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, Inc. realized a 20-year dream and completed construction on the June Key Delta Community Center. This reclaimed brownfield site serves as a gathering place for the community, a facility to house social, economic, and environmental service programs, and a model for green power and sustainability in the community.
The June Key Delta Community Center is blueprint to build and live sustainably. With an 18 kilowatt rooftop solar array and countless additional sustainable design features, this facility is on track to become the first grassroots, African American owned “Living Building” in the nation, meeting rigorous requirements to ensure a socially just, culturally rich and ecologically benign built environment.
This sustainable community center is making a statement that traditionally under-served communities can and should embrace sustainability. It provides opportunities for growth, visibility and advancement to the surrounding inner-city community.
The June Key Delta Community center is a beautiful beacon of hope, saying that people of color are not only taking part in the green movement – they are spearheading it.
