Partner Profile
Located in the small northeast Iowa town of Decorah, Luther College is a private undergraduate liberal arts institution of about 2,500 students. Luther owns a 1.6 MW wind turbine that generates approximately 4 million kilowatt hours (kWh) each year and purchases approximately 2 million kWh of green power from a nearby community wind project. Luther leases a 280 kW solar photovoltaic (PV) array that generates approximately 355,000 kWh per year. The college also owns a 4 kW solar PV array that powers a residence for students interested in sustainability and plans to install a 20 kW solar PV array during the 2012-2013 academic year.

Luther is a charter signatory of the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment. The college has reduced its energy-related greenhouse gas emissions via investments in energy efficiency and green power 38 percent since their peak in 2004 and is striving to achieve a net-zero carbon footprint by 2030. Luther recently received a Climate Leadership Award from Second Nature and is one of only 8 colleges and universities in the nation to receive an “A” on the College Sustainability Report Card. “Luther College is delighted to join the EPA’s Green Power Partnership. We want to be a model of sustainability for our students and the wider community rather than a mirror of the unsustainable practices of our culture”, said Richard L. Torgerson, President.
