Starting in 2004, Montgomery County has led a coalition of Montgomery County Agencies and municipalities to purchase electricity supply generated from clean national wind energy. The County, and the majority of its purchasing partners, took a bold step in increasing their percentage to 26 percent of annual electricity consumption, threefold the amount of their 2006 commitment and six times their initial 2004 commitment. Current participants include Montgomery County Government, Montgomery County Public Schools, Montgomery College, the Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission, Chevy Chase Village, Chevy Chase Village Section 5, City of Gaithersburg, City of Rockville, City of Takoma Park, Town of Kensington, and the Town of Somerset. To harness cost-efficiencies and maximize greenhouse gas benefits, the County and its purchasing partners, in most cases were able to triple their 2006 commitment maximizing carbon reductions without increasing budgets.
