Founded in 1969, the New England Aquarium is a global leader in ocean exploration and marine conservation. The Aquarium is one of the premier visitor attractions in Boston, with over 1.3 million visitors a year, and a major public education resource. They are redefining what it means to be an aquarium; combining education, entertainment and action to address the most challenging problems facing the ocean. In addition to their educational programs and conservation initiatives, they are implementing green power to have a positive global impact.
Like any organization, the Aquarium has to manage energy usage and recycling efforts in the policies enacted. They chose to have all of their yearly electricity load come from renewable power sources and they are improving lighting and water-pump efficiency. In addition, Aquarium researchers installed a system to reduce emissions of nitrogen oxide their research vessel, the Galatea.
Many of these initiatives have been put in place by a committee of Aquarium employees that we call the Green Team. This group continues to brainstorm innovative and effective ways for the Aquarium to conserve energy. We encourage other organizations and businesses to facilitate their own Green Teams.
