Raritan Valley Community College has its main campus in North Branch, NJ. The college was the first community college in the U.S. to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the EPA. The college has received several environmental awards and certifications, including AASHE STARS Bronze certification, River Friendly certification, a sustainability award from Sustainable Raritan, and an environmental stewardship commendation from the NJ Department of Environmental Protection. The college has been running a cogeneration engine (for heating, cooling, and electricity generation) since 2008, commissioned a 446 kW solar array in 2011, and as of December 2013 is proud to be purchasing 35 percent green power. The switch was easy, inexpensive, and consistent with the college's environmental goals.
